A typical power plant has several activities that affect air quality and that are regulated by federal, state and local regulations. The primary activity is operating fossil-fuel fired boilers. Other activities include operating turbines, emergency generators, diesel storage tanks--as well as air pollution control equipment. Air quality is regulated by the federal government under the Clean Air Act. While the air pollution control requirements are rather complex, you can consider that for a power plant’s boilers, they fall under the following select categories:
- Meeting air emissions standards
- Permitting for air emissions sources
- New Source Performance Standards
