If foods like spaghetti and pizza are among the staples of your college or university’s cafeteria fare, then it’s likely that cooking oil is being stored there. Even though oil used in a cafeteria setting is exempt from the EPA’s unused oil regulations (40 CFR Part 279), it should be stored in a container or tank and kept separate from regular trash until it is disposed of or recycled. Proceed through this section of the tour to learn more about the federal regulations that apply to storing unused oil, including cooking oil, on your campus.
Please note that regulations governing the transport, transfer collection, processing and refining, burning and marketing of unused cooking oil are not covered in this section of the tour, as EPA’s regulations typically don’t regulate the unused oil at campus cafeterias.
