The University of California has embarked on a new collaborative initiative designed to advance research and education in sustainable, green chemistry. The initiative involves: * redesign of chemistry curriculum and laboratories in the undergraduate curriculum * promotion of green, energy efficient laboratories * the appointment of Alexis T. Bell, professor of chemical engineering, to the newly established Dow Chair in Sustainable Chemistry. Dr. Bell is a leader in devising new catalysts to protect the environment. * the establishment of the new Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry -- a collaboration among the College of Chemistry, Haas School of Business, School of Law, College of Natural Resources, and the School of Public Health, all under the umbrella of the Berkeley Institute for the Environment
