EPA is honoring three universities for their use of Combined Heat and Power (also known as cogeneration) systems to save energy, lower greenhouse has emissions and decrease air pollution. According to EPA, the University of Missouri-Columbia, the University of California-San Diego, and Fairfield University's CHP systems are reaching operating efficiencies ranging from 55 percent to 75 percent compared to conventional fossil-fueled power plants.
