| Short Description |
Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will speak at the CSHEMA and CUHWC annual conferences this summer on the federal academic lab rule promulgated in December 2008. This rule allows a college or university to develop and implement an alternative approach for managing hazardous wastes in laboratories. The federal rule is, or will soon be adopted, by reference in five states: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Alaska and Wisconsin. Another nine states, including Massachusetts and Vermont, host states for the Laboratory XL Campus projects, have signaled their intention to adopt the federal rule. Initial surveys by CSHEMA suggest that campuses operating as Small Quantity Generators (SQGs) may be particularly interested in the flexibility offered by the rule.
