| Short Description |
California has issued new statewide building standards that are designed to reduce energy consumption by 15 percent and water used for landscaping by 50 percent. Environmentalists were unhappy with the draft code, noting that it does not adequately promote use of renewable energy, recycling and use of sustainably harvested wood. The new building standards are initially voluntary, but become mandatory in 2010. The standards are one of the strategies to meet the state’s legal mandate to reduce its carbon emissions by 30 percent in the next 12 years.
